Getting tested for STDs is convenient and completely confidential, just 3 steps to  regaining your piece of mind, by finding the answers to your questions about STDs from  our trained medical professionals.

What is an STD?

An STD is a Sexually Transmitted Disease. Other names for STDs include STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) and VD (Venereal Disease).

What are STD Symptoms?

Most STDs show no signs (are asymptomatic) or the symptoms mimic those of other health problems such as the common cold, flu or yeast infection.

“STI” is now the preferred term to “STD” because a person can be infected, and can infect others, without ever showing signs of carrying a disease.

Symptoms range greatly based on the type of STD a person has.

How are STDs Transmitted?

  • STDs are spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
  • STDs can be transmitted through direct contact with infected blood and the sharing of needles.
  • Some STDs can be transferred from mother to child during childbirth and breast feeding.

How do you Test for STDs?

  • ConfiLabs uses blood and urine samples to screen for STDs.
  • Blood samples are used to test for Syphilis, Herpes 1 and 2, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.
  • Urine samples are used to test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.
  • Less than 33% of U.S. physicians routinely screen their patients for STDs.

What are the Complications of STDs?

  • Complications associated with STDs can cause life-threatening conditions.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications from STDs.
  • A variety of complications can occur, depending on the type of infection, including: arthritis, cancers (oral, cervical, and others), difficulty walking or maintaining balance, eye inflammation, heart disease, HIV-associated lymphoma, HPV-associated rectal and anal cancer, infertility, maternal-fetal transmitted birth defects, memory loss, opportunistic infections (from HIV), pelvic inflammatory disease, personality change, etc.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, causes infertility. At least 15% of infertile women in the U.S. can attribute their condition to an untreated STD.
  • Use of condoms significantly reduces the risk of STDs and recurrent PID. Women who regularly use condoms were found to be 60% less likely to become infertile.

How are STDs Treated?

  • Many STDs are curable with antibiotic medication.
  • All STDs are treatable.

How are STDs Prevented?

  • Safe Sex Practices
    • Do not make direct contact with a sexual partner’s blood, semen or other body fluids.
    • Avoid sexual intercourse–vaginal, anal, or oral–with a new partner until you have both been tested for STDs.
    • Use a latex condom while having vaginal or anal intercourse. Consistent condom use significantly reduces transmission of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Syphilis and HIV.
    • Use a latex condom or dental dam to prevent direct contact of oral and genital mucosa.
    • Never use oil-based lubricants (i.e., petroleum jelly) with a latex condom because of the risk of the condom ripping or tearing.
  • Behavioral Practices
    • Don’t make sexual decisions while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
    • Don’t seek out sexual partners online or in other “pick up” places.
    • Talk with your partner about practicing safe sex and using a latex condom. Agree on what sexual activities are acceptable with one another.
    • In order to avoid putting yourself and your partner at risk, be in a faithful and mutually monogamous relationship.
  • The ABCs of Safe Sex
    • A – Abstinence – Abstain from sexual contact
    • B – Be in a Mutually Monogamous Relationship
    • C – Correct and Consistent latex condom use

How Common are STDs?

  • More than 50% of the population will contract a Sexually Transmitted Disease, or have one at some time in their life.
  • Over 65 million people living in the U.S. have a viral STD/STI.
  • At least 19 million new STD cases are diagnosed each year.
  • Less than 33% of U.S. physicians routinely screen their patients for STDs.
  • Less than 50% of U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 44 have been tested for any STD other than HIV/AIDS.
  • 25% of teenagers contract a Sexually Transmitted Disease each year.
  • 50% of all sexually active people will become infected with an STD by the age 25.
