Valentine’s Day Reminder to Get Tested for STDs

Some see Valentine’s Day as a gimmick started up by Hallmark and the chocolate candy producers to commercialize a pagan celebration.  The holiday for lovers is rooted in an annual Roman Festival when men took their clothing off and spanked young females to increase fertility and produce children.  For over 150 years this festival was celebrated each year until Constantine and the ancient church tied the pagan celebration with St. Valentine where lovers wanted to express their love through marriage.  Many groups are utilizing Valentine’s Day as a reminder for us to get tested for STDs.

STD Testing for VDAY

With Valentine’s Day as the day of giving gifts to the one you love; many health care centers take this day to promote good health with STD testing and health screening.  YouTube videos and other commercial outlets have clips that promote testing and condom use just in time for Valentine’s Day viewing.  A recent Trojan condom commercial has a couple sitting in a car on Valentine’s Day where the young man reveals to his girlfriend that since he has tested positive for gonorrhea, there is a good chance he gave it to her.  It is suggested by the video that it is okay as gonorrhea is easily Valentine's Daytreated with early testing while other STDs, such as herpes, can be a gift that just keeps on giving and can’t be returned to the store.  The condom use could have prevented both gifts from being given to a love relationship.

The gifts that keep on giving

After Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the most popular day to send cards and give gifts.  Many celebrate Valentine’s Day as the most romantic day of the year, while for some it is the most dreaded day when one is not involved in a romantic relationship.  There are those that on this day, to help them get through this time of being alone, take an old song to heart.  “If you can’t love the one you want, love the one you’re with”.  These individuals enjoy the romantic day of the year with a one night stand and in many situations a condom or other protection is not used.

Venereal Disease Day

There are those in the medical community that have dubbed Valentine’s Day as VD day from the angle that many venereal diseases are spread during this romantic day in February.  This is not the only day that a sexually transmitted disease is spread through unprotected sex, but this is a day that is looked upon as a big promoter for expressing oneself in a sexual manner that goes back to the pagan roots as well.  The romance is over quickly when the symptom of a possible STDs begins, and testing is needed to determine proper treatment protocol for all that have been involved in unprotected sex.

Instead of flowers, chocolates and cards; the most loving way to show you care is for both partners to go to a local  center or health clinic to get tested for STDs.  Flowers die, chocolate is eaten and most cards are soon forgotten.  Sexual health, free of sexually transmitted diseases will offer many more Valentine’s Day to be romantic and sexy.  February is the month of celebrations to the coming end of winter, to wish spring to hurry up, and to recognize lovers.  Spread the love to your special partner with seeking out a std-testing center and try out the latest condoms with the many colors and flavors to spice of Valentine’s Day while remaining disease free.
